Background of the Study
Deforestation remains one of the most pressing environmental issues affecting many parts of Nigeria, including Bakori Local Government Area (LGA) in Katsina State. Deforestation in Bakori has been accelerated by factors such as illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and inadequate enforcement of environmental laws. The geopolitical response to deforestation is influenced by a combination of political will, regional cooperation, land use policies, and economic interests. This study explores how geopolitical factors, including local governance structures, inter-state collaboration, and national environmental policies, contribute to the mitigation or exacerbation of deforestation in Bakori.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to address deforestation, Bakori LGA has seen a significant loss of forest cover, which has contributed to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and adverse climate effects. The problem persists due to weak enforcement of environmental regulations, insufficient political commitment, and the lack of effective regional cooperation on forest conservation. This study seeks to examine how geopolitical factors such as governance, policy implementation, and regional collaboration affect efforts to combat deforestation in Bakori.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To investigate the impact of geopolitical factors such as political alignment and governance on deforestation in Bakori LGA.
To assess the role of inter-state and regional cooperation in addressing deforestation in Bakori.
To propose strategies for improving geopolitical responses to deforestation in the area.
1.4 Research Questions
How do geopolitical factors, such as political priorities and governance structures, contribute to deforestation in Bakori LGA?
What role do regional cooperation and inter-state relations play in managing deforestation in Bakori?
What measures can be taken to improve the effectiveness of geopolitical responses to deforestation in Bakori?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Geopolitical factors such as political alignment and regional cooperation significantly influence the extent of deforestation in Bakori LGA.
Weak enforcement of environmental regulations is a major contributor to deforestation in Bakori.
Strengthening inter-state cooperation and enhancing governance structures will mitigate deforestation in Bakori.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will offer insights into the role of geopolitical factors in environmental governance, particularly in addressing deforestation. The findings will provide valuable recommendations for policymakers, environmental NGOs, and local governments on enhancing the effectiveness of deforestation management strategies. Additionally, the research will help inform national and regional policies on sustainable forest management.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus specifically on Bakori LGA in Katsina State and explore the geopolitical factors influencing deforestation within the area. Limitations may include challenges in accessing data on illegal logging activities and the political dynamics surrounding deforestation.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
